The main Arab states have agreed to restore Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's mind, a Russian newspaper reported.

Russia's Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper said what appeared two years ago had become a virtual plan put forward by the major regional powers to rehabilitate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad diplomatically.

And not only that, but Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt intend to return Syria to the League of Arab States.

The normalization with Syria was one of the topics discussed in a consultative meeting held by the League of Arab States in Cairo on January 9. The same theme is expected to be on the agenda of the meeting of Arab leaders to be held in Beirut on 19-20 January.

The newspaper said that one of the main objectives of the Arab countries, which decided to bridge the rift in the relations between the Syrian government and the Arab world, is to prevent the extension of Iranian influence to Syrian institutions, and to confront Turkey aspiring to control the north-east of Syria.

The Arabs intend to counter Turkey's ambitions by providing support to Kurds in northeastern Syria, whose fate is uncertain after US President Trump announced the intention to remove US troops from Syria.
